By BBN staff: The United States braces for impact as Hurricane Dorian was transformed into a Category 4 storm as predicted earlier this
week.

States of emergency have been declared in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, as Dorian arrives with winds of nearly 145 miles per hour. US officials have advised residents of areas in the intended path to store enough food, water and medicine for at least a week.

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) has warned that the storm could cause “incredibly catastrophic damage” and possibly the worst storm since Category Five Hurricane Andrew which killed 65 people and destroyed 63,000 homes in 1992.

“A potentially fatal storm surge and devastating hurricane-force winds are still possible along parts of Florida’s east coast early and mid-next week,” the NHC said.

In a notice released today, the NHC said Dorian is not expected to make landfall in Florida, but the possibility cannot be ruled out. Many Belizeans live in the state of Florida, and the Belize Consulate in the state issued a statement earlier in the week saying it would be closed until further notice in anticipation of the storm. Belizeans seeking urgent counseling can contact the Belize Consulate in Washington State until the Florida Consulate reopens.
