New Book Claims Meghan Markle Rejected Camilla’s Advice on Getting Married into the Royal Family

The experience of getting married into the royal family – especially as a woman getting married into the royal family – is unique and can only be understood by a handful of people.

According to a new book on Camilla, the Queen consort, royal expert Angela Levin writes that the then Duchess of Cornwall tried to welcome Meghan Markle when she married into the family, but it’s ‘fell flat’ – the Duchess of Sussex did not respond to Camilla’s advice, says Levin.

In Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall: a royal survivor (opens in a new tab)Levin quotes a royal insider as saying “she [Camilla] doesn’t want to see anyone struggle and she loves Meghan,” the source said of the first times Camilla contacted Meghan before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, per OKAY. (Camilla, of course, knows all too well what it’s like to face backlash from the public and the press because of her own relationship with the current King Charles III.)

Camilla apparently told Meghan that the Duchess of Sussex seemed ‘bored’ by her life and the Royal Family’s welcoming approaches, noting that it seemed Meghan ‘preferred to go her own way’ as she forged a position at the within The Firm (the name for the working-class nucleus of the royal family).

Levin writes that Meghan’s reputation within The Firm was initially solid, and Camilla recognized Meghan as a “hard worker”. Charles, for his part, “enjoyed” Meghan’s company, writes Levin, as the two shared an interest in theater and the performing arts. (In case you forgot, Meghan was an actress on the hit TV show Combinations before her marriage to Harry.) Charles even emotionally walked his new daughter-in-law down the aisle of St. George’s Chapel, as her own father, Thomas Markle, backed out of attending at the last minute.

Since then, of course, a lot has happened, and Marie Claire reported yesterday that Meghan requested a one-on-one meeting with Charles last week before she and Harry left for the US, where their children Archie and Lilibet were awaiting their return from the UK and the Queen’s funeral . It’s unclear if that meeting ever happened or what Camilla and Meghan’s relationship looks like today.
