Chronicle of Yi-Chin Lee / Houston

Pitcher Francis Martes was unclaimed after being removed from the Astros’ 40-player roster and nominated for an assignment last week. He was reassigned to the AAA Sugar Land class after being granted waivers.

Prior to the 2017 season, Baseball America ranked Martes 17th among the sport’s top prospects.

Martes suffered two drug suspensions in 11 months and underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2018. He served a 162-game suspension that extended to this season after testing positive for Boldenone in February 2020. Martes also suffered an 80-game suspension in March 2019, after testing positive for clomiphene.

Prior to this season, Martes had pitched just 25 innings in affiliate baseball since 2017. He has made seven appearances for Class AAA Sugar Land this season, covering 8 ⅓ of innings. Martes walked 13, threw three wild shots and struck out 10 at bat.
