Course to offer sound financial advice | Spare News

When conversations take place about issues people are facing, finances or financial planning are often identified as the top concerns. Smoky River Adult Learning recognized people’s financial concerns, and Administration Coordinator Leslie Carbone hosted an “Are You Money Smart” course to help address these issues. The course will be held November 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the MD of the Smoky River Administration Building in Falher. It will cost you $10 to take the course, but if cost is a barrier, a grant is available. “The course was developed by the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada and the Ontario Securities Commission in collaboration with Ellen Roseman, financial writer and journalist,” explains Carbone. “Smoky River Adult Learning is delighted to deliver the course. Topics that will be covered include budgeting, managing expenses, understanding credit, managing debt, saving, investing, and financial planning. Carbone says everyone is welcome, but registration priority will be given to people over the age of 18. She adds that Adult Learning hopes to be able to offer the training to young people over the age of 16 in the near future. “According to a survey conducted by MNP in 2018, less than one in five Canadians believe they have strong financial literacy skills, while almost two in five consider their knowledge weak,” she says. “The goal for our participants is to increase their confidence, increase their ability to protect themselves, increase their chances of achieving their goals, and provide them with tools to help them have a better quality of life. ” It is hoped that there will be 10 people registered for the course to ensure adequate attendance. The speaker will be Laurie Dagenais from Smoky River Adult Learning. If you would like to attend the class or would like more information, please call Laurie at (780) 837-4064 to register.
